You can use overlays, they are light and don't affect performance. There are some including scanlines here:
https://github.com/biscuits99/rp-video-m.../1080p_4-3
Download both .png and .cfg and enable it overlay from Retroarch menu
In case you select an overlay with borders, you will have to change a few video settings like options like custom viewport , integer scale and aspect ratio so the game screen is properly centered

We will probably add some to ROPi 3.0

Is this currently the best solution to add scanlines? Is this comparable with https://retropie.org.uk/docs/Shaders-and-Smoothing/?

yes, check overlays folder in /opt/retropie/emulators/retroarch/overlays/rpi, mame-phosphors, scanlines-3x-1280x720 are good options
crt-pi shaders are for Raspberry Pi only.

this is mame-phosphors

this is scanlines1280x720

Thanks, so overlays are preferred over shaders (I mean those from the github mentioned earlier) then?

Those shaders are great too, try both and see what's best for you

Hello Orange People!

After this topic has helped me understand how to add scanlines (without using heavy filters).

I share with all of you overlays with built-in scanlines that I've created.

They are simple overlay without much art to not generate distraction during the game.

Good game. Big Grin
